Well, it sure feels great! I have all of my orders done and ready to ship out tomorrow. I am leaving on Tuesday for some traveling adventures. I will first be going to Hilo, Hawaii to visit with a friend and then I am going to be taking a few more weeks to be with my mother.

On Friday, I took half the day to go skiing with my hubby, Chuck. It was the most perfect day and it was absolutely plush snow..with zero wind factor. So cool. I had a blast. It was the first day up this season as our snow situation was very poor up until a few weeks ago. I am hoping that when I return..there will be some snow left. I don't know..it really is great weather were having. If that was winter..that was quick!

I am looking forward to this time, to re-coop and to visit with my dear mom. As some of you may remember she had a stroke last July 2011 and it has changed my mom forever it seems. Everday is a blessing and I realize it. So, I am going to just do it..take the time to be with her and enjoy our time.

I hope all of you have a good month too. When I return I think I will be ready and refreshed. I have a lot of new ideas springing up, and I can't wait to share them with you all.

What a snow day! Time to ski at Mt. Bachelor!

I woke up this morning..and this is what I saw first thing! Living in the Pacific Northwest..you would think that we normally have snow ..like always right? Wrong! I will tell you a little secret and honestly say that our winters for the last 5 to 10 years have become milder and milder. Actually we have had a great fall season..high 50's low 60's, and sunny days...up until today that is.

I actually live 20 minutes down the road from Mt. Bachelor Ski Resort. I feel so blessed to say ..this is actually our backyard! Mt. Bachelor is actually a volcano that erupted eight to ten thousand years ago. It summits at 9065 feet! And it is one of the most funnest ski mountains I have ever had the honor of skiing. If your a skier...start thinking about visiting Mt. Bachelor. I promise it is so worth it!

So, today while we were all socked in..from the snow storm..I finished up nearly nine orders..all ready to ship tomorrow. Actually half of them were ready to ship yesterday, but I was not able to get to the post office because of all of this snow. I kind of love and hate snow at the same time.

I have been working with a lot of gold filled lately..which has been interesting. I will have to write a post on it here very soon.

Sterling Silver Moonstone Ring

Wow..what a beautiful day it is today! I was outside taking a few quick pictures after working in the shop all day and sun sun sun..come on in! I don't know but winter is just so nice this year. We had a tiny bit of snow one day and that was it. No more snow. Although, it's not good for our skiers for Mt. Bachelor here in Bend. I have to admit..I love skiing. Winter actually started at the end of December, so I will keep my fingers crossed for snow in the mountains.

This ring you see here is a 14 x10 mm faceted gem cut stone. It has a pointy back side ..so the bezel is tall. I did this as a commission for a customer who asked me to set her stone, and here is the results! It is a beautiful chunky moonstone ring with lots of blue flash! I had a lot of fun making a step bezel for this stone. This customer was so patient with me..I am awfully grateful because it was nice to not be so in a hurry for once!

Well, here we are five days before Christmas 2011. This is our Christmas tree. This year we went out and chopped this tree down in the forest down the road from us. I have to say it is my most favorite tree...since it is tall and wide and well lit..thanks to Chuck. Good job Chuck! As you can see there aren't many presents under the tree. We are still waiting for Santa to come. But, this year..we are keeping the stuff down to a minimum. It feels like we just get more and more stuff that we have to eventually get rid of. I am getting tired of it frankly.

Our stockings are hanging by the chimney with care. And, as you can see the sweet nativity scene on top of the fireplace has so many pretty lights..better in real life I would say.

Sophia my daughter asked me to help her bake some cookies for the neighbors tonight. Even though I am under the weather with a head cold and feeling run down from working long hours at the retail store.....this is what I love most about Christmas. I love making cookies with my little girl. She is just so sweet and happy ..and her cheerful attitude just makes me smile!

It is fun just getting cozy and looking at the tree. This year I have Sophia making more handmade ornaments for the tree. A lot of them have photo's of the kids in the past years. These are the best ornaments to me, the ones that bring all of the wonderful memories back.

Now that the store is slowing down, I am trying to get into the swing of Christmas with the family..and of course get rid of my cold I hope. I really want to enjoy Christmas, but I will tell you working retail can be very very tiring. I was honored with quite a few November jewelry orders which kept me plenty busy well into Dec. I have just one more custom order left, but frankly, I am exhausted with this cold. Although, I am looking forward to making the ring!

I NOW ACCEPT DWOLLA PAYMENTS!!!

Yes, Life is a bit hectic now.. I would say. I can't even sit around much to blog like the good ol' days.

I want to quickly share a new company with you, called "Dwolla". This company is going to change how we spend our money and of course I am sure a lot of you hear about the economy and so on. I never use to be a news kind of gal..but it is hard lately..trying to understand the future of our country.

Being in business for the last 10 years of my life, I realize how difficult it is to run a business and all of the cost it takes just to have an employee. The overhead of retail is extremely costly and many business' in America are starting to look overseas to lower cost.

One cost that is truly expensive and a brutal burden are merchant fees. Did you know that when you go into a store and use a debit or credit card there are all kinds of hidden fees that the merchant has to pay? There is a transaction fee, a merchant fee, and a percentage fee. If you have any type of rewards programs on your credit card, the merchant has to pay higher fees. Essentially, the merchants are paying for your "rewards". All of these fees are adding up...and it makes conducting business that much harder.

A new company called "Dwolla" is now allowing you to pay any merchant immediately with a transfer of cash..and it only cost .25 cents no matter the amount of transfer. So if you pay $1 or $500 it will only cost .25 cents. WOW! This is how it should be. I don't understand why credit card companies feel so entitled to a percentage of your transaction. But, we people don't seem to mind all of this debt and no one has really cared until now,.....when the banks are actually running out of money. I also hear credit card companies are furious about this..and all I can say..is it's about damn time!!

This little company called Dwolla is growing big like crazy. Younger people are realizing that they can not get credit cards so easily anymore and they have to pay "cash" for the things they buy. Frankly, I am glad to pay "cash" myself. The debt problem is seriuosly out of control in our country..and I am happy to support a business who is changing this for our youth especially.

Let It Snow..Let it Snow!

Good Morning Snow and Sunshine! I woke up this morning to this beautiful day. Every year when our first snow hits..you realize how wonderful and beautiful mother nature is as an artist herself. It's nice for a bit of change. Sometimes it can be cloudy grey skies here for days and days, and I wonder if the sun even exist lately.

Sometimes I will catch glimpse of a buck or some deer hangin around..but not this morning. Maybe it's too cold?

Well, lately I have been crazy busy in my shop. It's funny how Etsy has been lately for me, because about 3 weeks ago..I could hear crickets chirping and I swore my shop no longer existed due to the new "relevancy" search they switched over too.

I have been adding a few new one of a kind pieces. I get cravings to create and design something new more and more. I like making what I do too, but like anything else ..its nice to see a new design. Sometimes, I can't figure myself out. You see, I like it all...shiny silver, dark silver, shiny stones, opaque stones, shiny gold, matte gold..on and on. I can't find my focus. I want to make it all and see it all come true!

I decided..it didn't matter. I need to make what I feel like and that will be that. I hope someone stumble upons my work and does not think I am a bit confused with my taste? I truly see beauty in all things...I know I can find it in every single thing!

I am sure hoping to blog before the big Turkey day..but gosh if not...I hope you all have a good holiday season. Enjoy your family and friends and good food. I still believe we have a lot to be thankful for in this country inspite of all the negative news we hear.

One of my most favorite things to do in October is to visit this really cool pumpkin patch... or DD Ranch and pick out a pumpkin or two! It really is amazing gorgeous and beautiful and so much fun!

I have this inner desire to be a farmer..or wife of a farmer. I try to talk my husband into it, but he's not buyin it! It's obviously very hard work..but there is just something about being so close to the earth and working outside with animals and plants.

As a mom..one of my greatest joys in life are my children. I was reminded nine years ago that a sweet little girl entered my life! Miss little Mia turned nine yesterday! Needless to say ..I have been very very busy because we had a birthday slumber party. I will tell you..these are the kind of parties that never seem to end?

Have you heard of the Kinect box? It's a really fun video gamer, because now your body is the remote control and all of us "old" people can dance and play without having to fiddle with the controls. It really makes for a fun evening with your friends and family. Watching them perform a goofy dance or tiff it out in a boxing match can be hysterical when they are in their 70's!!!

Okay..well I am taking the rest of the day to relax..I need it. I pulled a muscle in my back earlier this week and now I know what it means to have a bad back... After this party..I am going to just enjoy a nice cup of hot tea and a movie..or maybe a book!

I love being green

Vasonite aka Vesuvianite set in 14k gold filled ring patterned ring band.

Isn't this stone just a beautiful green color? Wow. It's not easy to find an all natural green gemstone like this. I love green tourmaline but it is difficult to find a nice green one sized like this. This is called "Vasonite" or aka "Vesuvianite". I only have a very few of these and probably will not be able to get more.

14k gold filled patterned ring band

I am feeling much more comfortable working with gold filled and solid gold these days. The trick for solid gold is to anneal your metals to soft..or simply just order dead soft. The other thing is learning to use a punch when setting stones. I actually enjoy it..but you do have to have a pretty hard stone in my opinion as a beginner. The only thing that makes me tense is the cost of gold. It can be tense when working with it..because you may make a mistake ...and well you know! But hey! You can recycle it and sell it back..so it's not so bad.

I can also make these rings in solid gold if you would like...just let me know!

Hunky Pirates

Us jewelry sellers will have discussions in the Etsy forums regarding the use of a mannequin to display our jewelry properly. For the life of me...I have contemplated this issue over and over..and honestly, plastic people are just a turn off to me. EXCEPT...check these guys out, huh? What do you think? Not bad for a "MANnequin"...too bad they are plastic. They are kind of hunky to me. Maybe I would not have a problem displaying my jewelry on one of these guys..ha ha!

Newport, Oregon

Last week we headed on over to the Oregon coast to get away for a few days. After feeling like our summer was such a short slump..with my mom being ill, our family just needed a few real fun days to hang out. So, we decided to visit the coastal towns of Lincoln City, Newport, Netarts, Pacific City and Tillamook.

A Big Crab

We did our annual crabbing on a few of the docks. Although we did catch a ton of crab, we only caught four good size edible crabs. I guess we hit the negative tide last week and it really affected the height of the waters in the bays..so the bigger crab were not coming near the docks as much. Either that, we are seriously unlucky!! We also went clamming and wow..what luck we had there. The negative tide is ideal for clamming..and for the first time we were able to watch and participate with other clammers. The whole experience was educational and fun too!

Sea Lions

I think we should have rented a boat to go crabbing, maybe next time. We did get to see lots of sea lions and seals. We also tried to fly a kite on the beach, and just enjoy the mighty Pacific Ocean. We ate a ton of good sea food and just laughed at how we are so unlucky when it comes to fishing. It's a good thing we don't have to fish to eat!!

Just finished up this sweet garnet ring. Damn, it looks red doesn't it? This stone has lot's of color and with the oxidized sterling silver..it really stands out well. This ring is ready to go in my shop.

Rustic London Blue Topaz Sterling Silver Necklace

I found one last square london blue topaz gemstone and I wanted to make something different other then another ring...so I came up with this. I purposely and ruggedly set the stone for that rustic weathered look and appeal. I have a difficult time with my styles because I really like the rustic look too, but then sometimes I am in the mood for that shiny bling look. Hmmm? What does that say about me? And then, I also really like gold too! GEEZ!

I have a few druzy cabs that have been patiently waiting for me to set. I actually started this early summer. I just simply became side tracked and never finished it ...till this weekend. It's a new style for me. I don't normally make larger jewelry..but this is eye catchy and has a pop to it. It has that earthy rustic look..yet catches the eye.

Morganite Sterling Silver Ring

I made this ring by request for a wonderful customer of mine all the way in Germany! I have never seen morganite until recently and well...I have to say I really really love this stone. This particular stone is not treated..however, a lot of them are. Morganite conveys a pink to peach like hue. The photo really does not capture its beauty. To me it's like a hint of pink apricot.

Yesterday, Chuck and I decided to take a nice hike to Proximity Falls in Oregon. It was a wonderful day just getting away from the rift raft of life to be enchanted with this gorgeous forest with many hidden incredible waterfalls.

I felt like I was in fairy land! Sometimes when you have a moment...you realize just how truly majestic and incredible the earth is. The life that it springs forth and for every season a new leaf that brings more beauty every single time.

I think I'm gonna miss summer!

I think I'm going to miss summer, even though it was really tough with my mom having the stroke and all. I always enjoy the warm season and a day by the river or a lake fishing hangin out with my daughter and hubby. I am so grateful to be surrounded by a ton of natural beauty.

Protect your lungs!

My husband said to me ..." you better wear a face mask when your doing this stuff". I admit, I am very bad about it. But, not too long ago I was reading somewhere the effects of the micron dust particles that will most likely stay trapped in your lungs forever. I suppose that it would be similar to smoking or inhaling smoke and chemicals all day. Well, if you make jewelry..you will do this. And it is best to think about setting up a shop that is also safe for you as well. It does take some thought and money too.

This is the new Foredom filter hood that my husband broke down and bought me. I am encouraged to wear my mask still to be extra safe. This thing is nice as it has a built in vacuum suction that also can catch fine precious metal particles..which you can send to a refinery too! It also has the light which helps your eyes.

I am trying to reorganize my shop in which I can use this machinery for my bench lathe as well as my hand piece or flex shaft. Sort of tricky as space is always an issue for me. But, I have to do it..because what is your health worth?

The other thing I would like to do someday is install a ventilation hood over my soldering station. This is very expensive to do it seems. Right now I am using a tiny fan that I turn on over me to blow the air away. It seems to work well for the cheap.

Trying to get back to normal

London Blue Topaz set in 14 K Gold Filled Bezel & Ring Band

Well, yes I am trying to get back to normal. My mom is doing better although after returning home with her, she had to be re-admitted back into the hospital once more. A week later, her blood pressure started to shoot way way up and the doctors were very concerned she would have another stroke. She is still in rehab as I write this and overall is doing well. She is expected to come home again on Sept. 5th. I am keeping my fingers crossed and praying greatly for her.

In the meantime, I have been trying to get back into the swing of things. It really isn't easy. It hurts especially to see my dad so very sad too. But, I am busy this month it seems. I feel being busy is good for my heart and mind as I try to think of the positive things in my life right now.

Blue Flash Rose Cut Moonstone set in 14 K Gold Filled Bezel and Ring Band

On the bright side, I have been working with more gold and yes, gold -filled metals too! I have noticed that few metal smiths work with gold filled for some reason and it is not easy to get information on it. So I have taken on the adventure myself and decided to pursue it. As you know gold almost hit $2000 per troy ounce this last month. It is very painfully expensive to get started in gold these days and it really saddens me.

Gold is very hard to work with. So, I have learned that setting stones in 14K gold is NOT easy. You have to use a hammer and punch to push the metal around the stone. Hopefully your stone is hard enough to take the punch! I realize now why some smiths use 18K or higher gold stock for bezel's...which of course means more expense. Although, I know there are customers who can pay the price..I will gladly make anything in gold for a customer.

Gold Filled is tricky to work with. The biggest problem is exposing the core layer which is usually brass when you make a custom fit bezel. This usually happens at the bottom of the base of the bezel. But, it shines up very nicely if you go easy on it. Also the bezel wire I am finding at Rio is only 30 g stock premade..so you do have to cut out your own bezel strips with 28g metal sheet or so if you want thicker bezels. This area can also expose the brass. But, I have noticed that the gold filled blends very well with the brass and honestly it is just as beautiful as a solid gold piece. There is no visual difference to the eye!! I am sure that the exposed brass may have a tendency to tarnish in time, but a good polishing cloth can solve that problem!!!

Because gold is actually bonded molecularly to the brass, it will not chip or flake off like gold plated. Gold filled is considered lifetime jewelry and overall is a good quality choice if you want something in gold but don't want to spend hundreds and thousands for it. As far I as I hear gold is continuing to go up and up ..which will make gold filled itself become expensive at one point. But also, anything made in gold filled can easily be made in solid gold as well!!

A Natural Prehnite Rose Cut Gemstone in Sterling Silver

Hello my friends...yes it has been awhile! I have not posted for several months now..although I have intended to do so. My blog is being neglected because life has been so very very crazy this summer.

Summer came late to Central Oregon this year. It really did not consistently warm up till mid July it seems. Usually we have gone camping 3 or 4 times by then, but this year, we only went once ..for a week. That was probably the funnest thing we have done this summer so far.

My sad news is that my sweet mom and dad came out to visit on July 26th from Nevada. And on July 27th in the evening at 9 pm I witnessed my mother having a stroke. So for the next 3 weeks my mother has been in the hospital here in my town. I recently just flew her home on the 12th of August. What an experience this has been for myself and my family.

In the last few years my mother's health has been an issue. Last summer she experienced a tumor (non cancer) on her spinal cord and was going to be paralyzed from the chest down. But they were able to remove it and she was slowly rehabilitating from that...and now this stroke. God..it is so painful to watch someone you love so much go through pain.

My mother is amazing however. She is walking and although her left side has been affected, she can talk well and move her left arm up. Her left fingers still need some work..but we believe she may have close to a full recovery.

On the bright side of this story. I am witnessing great love between my parents whom have been together for 42 years now. And even as this is so hard to just write about, I have learned that life is nothing without love. Even when life can be so hard and enduring, your family and friends is what really matters through it all.

I have nothing new or exciting to show you as I have had hardly enough time to keep up with work and my jewelry sales..just this sad story.

But, it is where I am with my life right now and what I am up to. I hope that I will turn the page on this and find my mother much better in the next few months as I try to get back to normal. It's not easy going through each day with a heavy heart.

Mt. Bachelor, Bend, Oregon - Leeway Run

What a great day I had yesterday skiing! This is the best spring skiing I have done in long time with my sweetheart! Chuck took the day off and said "let's go play"...and that is exactly what we did! The snow was perfect..the sky was clear and going downhill was just awesome! I can't wait to go again on Sunday.

I have to share this with you because it's one of those days where you feel like "wow"...I can't believe how beautiful mother nature truly is. For me being on these mountains makes me feel like I am as close to heaven as I can get and I know God is with me here...as this is exactly what he intended for us all. Simple pure beauty ..love and joy.

May is a month where new life is springing up and the sun is so full of warmth...I look forward to it. Today we are going to watch our son participate in district finals for track. This race will qualify him for state level which we hope greatly for. He has worked so hard...it is great to see him produce his wanted results. He has been eating super healthy ...all raw foods and has learned a great deal about nutrition through his sports. In my mind..what more can you ask for ..right? It's hard to get your kids to eat healthy by all means.

Hello Everyone! Happy Mother's Day to all of you wonderful moms out there! I knew I had to at least get this post in for all the moms I know!

It has been a bit of time since my last post here on my blog. I think for the first time I experienced the "Ides of March". March was such a tough month for me..I could not believe all of the horrible things going on in the world...especially with Japan. It seriously made me sad and lately with such dreary cloudy weather...it made everything worse!

Lately I have been reading so much negative sad things about our countries financial problems and why so many middle class Americans are being affected by this down turn. Gosh, I am not a dooms dayer by any means, but as I watch the price of silver and gold shoot up..I had to wonder what the heck is going on?

Well, I finally am snapping out of my bit of depression I think I was experiencing. And, I have been taking the last few months to try to learn more new techniques with my jewelry. I am now making all of my own bezels..instead of using pre-made ones. I also recently learned how to make a box clasp and a key clasp for bracelets or necklaces. I will share this with you in another post..but wow..it was so fun and enlightening to me!

For Mother's Day... I hope all of my friends here take a moment to realize the importance of family, love and friendship. As I get older every year...I truly feel so grateful for my life with my children and loving husband.

It is also my birthday this month and my husband and kids purchased the sapphire in the ring above. I was tickled to actually make my very own ring and yes the cushion setting for it. Since I have the ability..I thought why not. I am not yet at the level of sapphires and diamonds..but this is my first "expensive" setting per say..and it sure came out well for me..and I get to keep this!

I am selling this in my store with white topaz instead to keep cost affordable, but if someone wants a sapphire..I can do that too!

We wish all of you a wonderful mother's day weekend. I hope you enjoy your family as much as I do mine.

I am going to be very busy this month as my son will be going to state finals at OSU for track. He also graduates high school this year. My children are ten years apart ..so it makes me realize how crazy fast time goes by. My son has been so athletic and so much fun to watch him play soccer and participate in track and field. I will definitely miss this. He will be leaving us to go to college this year...so were hoping!

My daughter is now 8 years old and what a sweet joy she is! She is very much a girly girl and one day I hope to run and operate a jewelry business with her. I plan on passing on everything I learn to her and yes..so far she seems like she is loving it too!

Learning to set fancy cut stones!

Purple Amethyst Emerald Cut Gemstone Set In Sterling Silver Ring Band

Learning to make a an emerald cut bezel setting is a new revelation! I see why they call it a "fancy" cut. It sure is a fancy thing if you can make one of these I would say. It really isn't that easy and takes good practice. After taking a few lessons with my instructor Jim Dailing..I have now learned to set stones in a flush setting and tapered heavy bezel settings for the round stones and cushion cut stones. And oh yes..the emerald cut stone..which has 8 cut sides.

My all time favorite setting is tapered bezels which has always been so intricately hard to understand and calculate. You see, I am not a math kind of girl..nope hate it. Now it all comes back to me as to why my teacher was trying to teach me all of those formulas in geometery. I now wish I paid attention! I purchased a cushion cut tapered bezel stamp from Italy..NOT CHEAP! I better like using this thing I would say! But, here is one of my pieces from the bezel punch. I used 18g fine silver to make this tapered cushion cut bezel with the punch..and then I hand cut a seat for the stone to sit. FUN!

Okay so I bit the bullet. I am and have decided that I am going to be offering solid gold pieces. I have been working with gold filled and this has helped me gain confidence in finally feeling like I know what I am doing with gold. I love the look of this metal, but we all know it is at its all time highest and truly very expensive for a small time jeweler like me. But, I really feel that I need to grow in this area. I have had 5 rose cut diamonds setting here waiting for a home. Of course they need that gold home..ha ha! I am going to take some photos of them and post them here on the blog.

Reorganizing My Shop

" The whole shop - reorganized?"

I have to admit..its been nice lately having some time for a bit of "spring" clean-up. I won't lie...we are having a bit of spring weather here in Central Oregon while the East Coast gets dumped on were unusually warm right now. We were told it was going to be a really really "cold " winter according to the Farmer's Almanac...but I guess it just passed us right on by! What do ya know? So..well, I can't complain, I will be glad to take some warm weather. Were at 54 degrees right now and sunny...sweet! When your working in a cold garage..cold weather is NO fun!

Last year working in my shop was soooooo cold. I have contemplated in splitting some light industrial space with other metal smiths in town, but I really don't need more expenses to incur. This "was" my husband's shop originally, but he has NOW let me take it over. I have slowly been hiding his tools and guy "stuff" in those cupboards you see to the right! He seriously is a sweetheart to give up his shop for my jewelry..hugs to my Chuck!

So,I cleaned up the garage this last month to make it more of my own space..its still rugged but it is more roomy and pleasant now. During the summer its not so bad working in the shop, with the garage door open its actually very nice, ..but during winters it can get so cold and I don't feel like working with blue fingers and a runny cold nose! I have to use several electrical heaters to warm this place up and when it's snuggy warm, I actually like this place now!

I also have added another working table in the middle of the room and it sure is nice. You can't go wrong with more room to work on..believe me. I was lucky to find this table below on craigslist for only $25 bucks..wow!

It's funny because I was just checking out how immaculate someone else's shop was and I about died! I could never be that organized! Some of you are probably wondering how funny I am thinking my shop is all neat right now..but well, you should have seen this place before. Let's not go there! I did not even take pictures..don't need memories of my messy shop! But, I am finding a bit of peace with this spot of my own..thanks God!

Non Traditional Wedding Ring I made in Nov. Crystal Quartz in Sterling Silver

Well.. we made it through another year and here we are beginning another one. I look back at 2010 and I feel grateful primarily for a few things. My mom's health is better it seems and I am actually making jewelry as a business. And yes of course, my children are well, healthy and happy and my family life is strong and good. The holidays went well, but life is crazy busy during the month of December and I am seriously happy to have that pass now. Lately, I have been just trying to relax more and keep pace with a few orders here and there and just enjoy my time with the kids and Chuck. Although, I am still working part time at the retail store, and working in my studio..I am busy..but not the craziness busy of December...whew!

Looking into the future...I am beginning more lessons with Mr. Jim Dailing here next week. My hope and intent is to meet with him regularly for a few months so that I can solidfy some new techniques that I am really wanting to learn. I am yearning to learn more about flush settings, faceted gemstones that require more skill in setting..for example..oval gemstones, cushion cut gemstones etc. Last year we were not able to meet regularly..but it appears we might get to for the next few months. So wish me some luck of the Irish! I sure need it.

I want to wish all of you a prosperous and successful New year! As well as good health, love and happiness! I am sort of superstitious but I truly believe that what you send out in this world in positive energy will come back to you! Now..it goes the same for negative..but we don't have any of that here!

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays my friends! I am just checking in to say a quick hello! It has been snowing here for nearly a month up here in the mountains! The skiers are finding their way in and so are the deer! I wake up every morning and this is what I get to see out my back yard! They are beautiful..but they will eat everything you plant in the summer!

I am proud to say that I am finally caught up with all of my orders and the last piece will go out on Monday! Whew! It sure feels good to be finished. I am busy working at the retail store for now..and if I get any free time..will start to build up a "ready to ship" section. I am trying to be ahead for Valentines Day..since I am missing out on Christmas sales!

Just finished these up yesterday. I just love copper and labradorite together..seriously beautiful!

And also this cornflower blue chalcedony sterling silver ring..already to go too!

I will be back after Christmas ready to go. It will be nice to visit with family and relax when the dust settles.

Well, Happy Turkey Day my friends! Wow, does the time fly by? These last few months I feel like days just swish by me so briskly and then I realized it has been a bit of time since I have checked in last.

I have to admit that Thanksgiving is my most favorite holiday of the year. All of the good foods, turkey, potatoes, salads, and yum yummy desserts with your family and friends...makes it the very best. Although Christmas is just as good..it does seem hectic too when you work retail or create jewelry..because for me..I am frantically working very very hard and my whole world just seems chaotic. I m just not sure it was meant to be that way, but yet it is what it has become.

I have decided to put my shop on "Vacation Mode" which I truly hate to do! Uugh! But this year I have absolutely NO choice. Last year I had to work at the retail store full time and make jewelry for the month of December and I thought was going to keel over. I spent many nights up till 2 am making jewelry...it was just way way too much!

So this year I am going to focus on my family obligation to the retail store working nearly 60 hours or so and give my jewelry store a bit of a break. It is a serious bummer but I have to do it for my sanity.

My hopes for the last few months was to start working on one of kind already made items for my jewelry shop, but I barely even get enough time for that. So ..I will have very few pieces for sale when I get back for Thanksgiving with my family. Oh yes, I am leaving for Turkey day..and that will be the whole week..to visit with my mom. Remember she was very ill in July..so these days are extremely precious to me. I have decided to make time and not think that time will ever allow it. Because I have realized I must guide my time and not let it take over me.

In a way I feel like maybe this is okay. I have been very consumed with making the same few items in my store over and over and well frankly...I get a bit tired of that! Learn to solder correctly - Beginning MetalSmithing

I wanted to take a moment to share with some of my friends in the jewelry world what I discovered! Because, I pretty much taught myself how to use a torch by reading bits and pieces here and there on the internet, I knew that I had room for much more improvement and thus, I found this wonderful DVD for sale.

This DVD is called "The Heat Zone" A Revolutionary Soldering Method...by Helen Blythe Hart!

This is a very simple to follow, interesting to watch and very informational DVD on learning to solder using the heat zone method! Helen the instructor is very knowledgeable as she holds degrees of a BFA in metals from Indiana University, and an MFA in Sculpture and Metals from Georgia State University. She is also a Graduate Gemologist (GIA) and a member of the Society of North American Goldsmiths.

With all of that..there is even more..as she is an amazing artist and you are welcome to read more about her in her ETsy shop! But.. even better she has been instructing students for over 18 years now..and she is VERY good at it! So this DVD is worth paying for!

There is actually a lot to learn ..but most importantly she explains the anatomy of the flame and all of a sudden it clicks and this is what the foundation of the heat zone is based on. Once you have a true understanding and depth of fire..it makes more sense.

There are at least 5 or so exercises along with her own professional tips and tricks, that you will go through to learn how to solder better..make simple and complicated things that you often questioned before. There is also a .PDF loaded with written information for your starved mind! But, also, since I own the DVD..I can watch it over and over..and not forget some essentials. The cool thing is the camera gets right down into the area you really need to visualize and see..which is hard to see even in real life!

So now after trying these methods I notice that my work is cleaner and I feel and see a difference when I am working with my torch. I now can see some of my design ideas coming alive as before I wondered..just how do they do that.

There are a lot of experienced metalsmiths who are also benefiting from this as well...and finding some enlightenment!

I personally can't wait for "The Heat Zone 2" Dvd myself!

Etsy's New Website Look

I am sort of going crazy with the new website look that Etsy has going on! They are not leaving us any room for personal announcements and it makes me nervous. If you have to announce current turnover times, or family emergencies, or anything of importance we better hope our readers decide to click on "read more"!

I really feel disheartened with Etsy right now. As a seller with two shops there I pay a lot of fees every month and I can't for the life of me understand why they would give us this open announcement option for all of these years and then decide one day that it is not important for us to have.

They say people complain about having to scroll past the announcements. I have to ask if these are the same people who are afraid to walk too? Because scrolling does not consume very many calories and simply... people are this lazy? It really is very ashame.

I truly believe that Etsy has grown to be so successful because 1st of its community feeling. And being a community means we can express ourselves ..our personality. I truly believe each shop had its opening narration to the artist or seller of every store. Some used their announcements with very few words..some told you a story ..but still it was the words that brought personality to each store.

Now, when I look at our shops all I see is stuff...LOTS of stuff for sale on Etsy now. It is blinding to me. There is no white balance and basically after the 1st page..I can't wait to stop looking. Before Etsy was a magnet..now it's the opposite. It literally changed poles on me.

I rarely allow things to get to me, but for some reason I am going to have to pray for peace on this one because it really does make me mad.

I think what really makes me most upset is that Etsy does not give us the option. It really feels like Etsy is running my store and not myself. Even though, I know the day's in and out's of what my customers ask and need..they feel they know more. It really is hard to believe considering they run a web store business and I make custom made to order jewelry. There is quite a difference.

Family Reunion Time

Okay.. so I have the blogging blues! Blogging blahs..what do you call this? For those of you who read my last post, my mom is doing well. Thank you for all of your kind comments, prayers and wishes for her.

As you know I left sort of abruptly to go be with her in Nevada, about 3 to 4 weeks ago. My mom was feeling very ill, sort of numb like and then she lost her ability to walk. This is when she decided time to see a doctor? She has bad arthritis so she thought maybe this was her problem. Most of us thought she might of had a stroke or something, but guess what..no stroke!

What she did have was a benign tumor on the T4 spine putting immense pressure on her spinal cord. We did not know if it was benign until after the surgery, but before the surgery we were all seriously depressed and scared for her.

Here is a photo of my parents a few years back when they came to visit me here in Bend. They are so sweet, such kind simple people. I really miss them.

Anyhow, my mom is on the road to recovery and she should be walking again in the next 2 to 3 months with a full year of 100% healing time. I guess we are lucky, and blessed and truly grateful it was not worse then it was. Its not cancer..and its not coming back..so thank God!

During this time of the year my dad's family gathers up in Trinity Lake, California. Its a place for serious fun, if you like water skiing, camping, fishing and friends and family of course. So this is where I am going for the next few days..hang out with family and try to have fun. It won't be the same without my mom and dad.

I have a lot of new jewelry I have yet to talk about on my blog. I am just lazy about it right now. I feel like I need to be off the computer sometimes. After I photo my work, describe it, edit photos, and post it to the etsy store, I am done. Online shops consume you in a mental way and before you know it the whole day has passed. Does this happen to you?

Thanks for letting me express myself. This summer is seriously going fast..so I have to make the best of whats left. I hope you all are enjoying time with your family and friends.

I took a walk this afternoon, after working super hard these last three days I feel exhausted. I have been trying to get caught up with all of my orders before I have to leave. I needed to breathe fresh air and feel the sun for just a moment. On Thursday morning, I received a phone call from my father stating my mom was hospitalized ..and possibly she may have had a stroke. Although it looks like she did not..there is still something wrong, as she can not walk right now and is feeling very sick still. So, I am taking the kids and we are going to visit with her for a week.

It's really hard right now wondering what's ahead with my mother ..my parents. I know we all go through this but I have a really hard time thinking about not being able to have my parents around. It really scares the "shit" out of me..sorry for my lingo..but it just does. I really love both my parents so very much.

I guess for now I can at least be happy our weather for summer seems to have finally come. Oh my gosh, it literally was 56 degrees here just over a week ago. Today we hit 80 degrees..thats summer here. For six months literally we have had nothing but cloudy, cold gloomy days. There have been very sporadic moments of sunny spring days but not really much at all this year. We supposedly get 300 days of sunshine here in a years average, but this year we have had half that amount or less it will seem. This is my little Sophia, wading in this seriously cold river. Only children born and raised here can do this I tell ya! All of this water is melted snow run off from the mountains near by.

I will be out of the studio all of next week from June 28th to July 5th. I hope all of you have a great 4th of July! I will be with my folks and kids, while my husband tends to our animals and the homestead. It will be good..I am hoping it will.

Madagascar Aquamarine Gemstone

I found this plump juicy aquamarine gemstone and I could not wait to get into a setting..oh my gosh. I think it has to be one of the most prettiest rings ever. It sure makes a beauty cocktail ring. It measures 14 X 10mm. It blows my mind that this is a natural stone..meaning no enhancement at all. Wow..most stones need a little help from man, but I am truly amazed with this one.

It was quite fun making this ring. Lately, I have wanted to do something more different. I have been taking some private lessons from a professional metal smith named Jim Dailing here in Bend. He actually was a professor in Portland as he reports a "Masters" degree in metal smithing.

Okay, so I am not wanting to put pressure on myself, but I certainly want to expand my horizons..so be on the look out!

Sterling Silver Stacking Rings

Stacking rings are still my favorites. They are versatile and wear comfortably. They make every day just fun. I am accumulating a lot of scrap and I am trying to find ways to recycle my silver scraps here and there. I am going to be sending my scraps in eventually at some point.

With patterned ring bands, I am still challenged as how to solder them without much of a seam. These thinner ones, I can sort of get away with it..but the wider ones are much more tricky. Any advice anyone? Sure would appreciate it.

10mm Rose Cut Citrine Gemstone Sterling Silver Ring

So a very nice lady back East ask me to please fabricate this gorgeous ring for her..as this was going to be her wedding ring! Wedding ring? Oh my ..I felt so honored so, I thought how in God's name was I going to really do this? She wanted an earthy ring and liked the feel of my style and really wanted a simple rose cut ring with a large citrine stone.

My big concern is ..now I know why for all of these years they never cut clearish stones into cabs. Well, when you set them you have one problem...that is. They can allow the viewer the visibility of the back of the bezel and yes it can be a problem.

So with this ring, I implemented a piece of gold filled sheet metal on inside of the bezel. This allows a more "yellow" reflection and basically enhances the stones coloring. Although..it was really fine by itself, gold was a better option then silver. Sure would be neat if someone could invent some colorful metals for enhancement purposes. Anyone?

Nevertheless, the ring came out looking incredible and so I felt lucky to pull this off. I explained to her the risk of a see through cab..she did not seem to mind a bit. Hey, I am happy too. I get to look at this photo for a awhile.

My work is rather simple lately. I know this. I really wanted to perfect the bezel making thing which I feel better about these days. My hope is to start setting faceted pointy stones in tapered bezels..I can't wait!

The month of May has been hectic! Well, in a good way. I truly can't complain, but it has been a very busy month. First, there was Mother's day, then I hit a milestone birthday..I can't tell which one! And then, Memorial Weekend brought many friends and family around..as well as the birthday party did too! So yes, between working a day job, being a mom and making my jewels..I have been so very busy.

Although, living up here in the mountains can be beautiful it does have its downfalls too. Well, at least for this last 6 months it has. Our weather has been so cold and gloomy. We rarely can shake our clouds. Getting a good photo is tough with our lighting situation. The photo below is a sunny day ..the way it should be. But, it has not been this sunny. I would rather look at this instead of the May grey we are having...blah! I am seriously cherishing this photo right now. I swear the weather has been so weird this year. We typically have 70 degree weather around this time with lots of sun..but this year we are averaging 58 to 65 degrees ...on the chilly side....with no sun!

A Nice Day in Central Oregon- May Picture

But, we did have one very nice weekend in May which allowed us to go on a quick camping outing with our new RV on a last minute basis. The weather can change daily here, but we were lucky to find a spot that was open that weekend. 20 minutes away!

My scruffy honey has always wanted one of these, and NOW is the time to buy one. He says this is my birthday present. But, I think it's a real present for him.. really! We have lived in the Central Oregon area for over ten years and we do not camp out as much as we would like. It's way too much work, but hopefully we will now. I guess it doesn't help that our son played serious soccer all over the place every summer for the last ten years as well! We are excited. I have to admit, this is our first real big toy. We had to save up for a very long time to get this..I hate being in debt!

We also inherited a new puppy..his name is "Hops"..Hopson Barley that is. My husband loves beer! But, the name "Hops" suits this dog..because he is very acrobatic and literally can hop or jump very high. My daughter is enjoying her new friend..and we are enjoying him. He is a mini Australian Shepard. He is a red merle with blue eyes, super smart and intelligent as well! Our other adorable Shitzu is still hangin around..it is hard to see her age. My children are ten years apart, and so are the dogs!

Well, thanks for letting me catch up with you all a bit. Believe me ..I could tell you more. I don't want to bore you with my life! Ha Ha!

But, I hope you are all enjoying your warmer weather. We are praying for some here, but it feels like it's not going to come here for a while. I will check back in when I get a chance. Being so busy keeps blogging on the lag lately..but I try my best!

Happy Mothers Day to all of my blog friends! I hope all of you out there are enjoying time with your families and friends on this special day. Although, the truth is "everyday" is mothers day, I truly enjoy my children..I love them greatly! My husband will be making a nice dinner this evening, while I work in my studio to fill some orders.

Recently, I have added some new custom personalized jewelry to my shop! I have had a lot of local request for personalized jewelry for friends and family and their friends. I really enjoy making it..something different for a change and fun too!

Helenes Dreams & 101 Best Beads On Vacation 4/7 to 4/18 !

Yay! My sweet hubby, Chuck, booked a vacation for our family as a surprise this year to Cancun, Mexico. His company kindly passed on a ton of airline miles to help us afford this wonderful trip this year. They told us we needed to use them by the end of May this year, and well... surprise..here we go!

So, I can't complain about this. I feel like I really could use a vacation..or something new for a change. It has been snowing all week long here up in the mountains. We have had grey skies for weeks and it is seriously chilly all of the time. Yes, I am ready for some sun and happiness!

Okay well, I admit it, I have not been the best blogger lately. Somehow just fell off those tracks..and trying to get back on board! So lets start this one off with a bang! I am going to promote my own giveaway...hey why not!

But first, let me tell you what I have been up to lately. For the photo on top, I finally was able to set a few of my chalcedony gemstones. Here is my first wide ring band, hand forged, 1/2 inch wide over 1mm thick ring band with a set peruvian blue or sea foam chalcedony gemstone. It was a challenge getting the bezel to stay on the ring band just right when I was soldering it..NOT easy at least for now.

I have been teaching myself how to set simple round gemstones. Well, since I am a rock fanatic, I need to know more about pointy stones too! So this is one of my first challenges. Here I have created a tube bezel with heavy wall tubing. I bought lots of setting burs and made this ring 5 times before I felt like I finally have it down. The hardest trick for me was learning to solder the shanks on to the sides of the bezel, instead of the bezel being on top of the ring shank. After numerous painful trys..I finally figured it out. I need to recycle a lot of metal..its true. I am now moving on to cushion shape and oval tube settings. Wish me luck.

By the way the trick here is to not have any hard pressure holding the ring shank to the tube bezel and practice!

I have started to seriously work with a bit of gold filled metal now too. Soldering is slightly different with gold filled. It works more like regular gold, but it is very limited in what you create with it. Gold is so expensive right now, that it is almost untouchable for someone who is learning a lot. So, I am practicing with Gold Filled for now. I use boric acid and denatured alcohol with flux to keep firescale from accumulating. I also keep the heat more centralized at the point at which I am working. It does take more time to melt the solder so it seems with gold filled.

Gold filled jewelry is considered lifetime jewelry and it certainly shines up beautifully just like the 14k gold with very little difference at all. I hope to graduate to just gold someday! But for now I am working a few new designs with gold filled and personalized handstamped jewelry ...so please check back!

Just some randomness....today

The other morning I woke up to this beautiful 6 point buck in my backyard. He is gorgeous. It is kind of nice lately, just catching up with things..relaxing and enjoying some peace. I know I have not been a good blogger lately. But sometimes, after all the Christmas rift raft and busy busy ..I sort of need to just veg out really for a while.

Not that I am not busy with my jewelry shop and new designs..I am keeping busy. I am so grateful for it too. Sometimes I think the man upstairs just keeps everything in line for me and I am always finding someway to keep work going. Today I was able to add a few new pieces to my shop.
These are a simple dangle earrings. Pretty beer quartz wrapped in oxidized copper wire. They are on of my best selling dangle earrings. It is hard to find nice size honey colored gemstones. But I have about 3 pairs of these for now.

I added these sweet smoky quartz post stud earrings today too. The cut and color on these are so beautiful. Very earthy yet sweet hint of color. Nice.

I have been happily exploring my desire to create a flower of some kind. At one time I use to make flower earrings. Now its time to try a few rings. This ring sits very happily on my finger ..just makes you smile, them flowers.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all My Friends!

Wow, yes it has been quite a long time since I have blogged! It was such an incredibly busy month for me. All I can say..is I am sorry! I was very busy with my day job..which is NOT metal smithing. As a matter of fact, my family owns a mailing shipping store..UPS store like and it was seriously very busy. Yes, this is where I work a few days out of the week. (cat out of the bag!)

I am sure you heard of the term "going postal"..well I know what that means..literrally. ON top of 12 hour work days, I would stay up till 1:00 am to get some jewelry orders done before Christmas. I won't complain about my jewelry orders, as I love making jewelry...but I am completely utterly exhausted.

I have not had much time to make any new designs, except I have been working with gold filled metal now and I am pretty excited about it. I just recently made the faceted amethyst gold filled earrings shown above for my lovely mother in law. She loves jewelry...and the color purple...and yes gold.

I also have been trying to perfect my bezels. I am making smaller and smaller ones, which are not always that easy. When I first set this kyanite oval gemstone..it was very difficult. It really is beautiful in a handmade bezel as oppose to the pre-made ones. Making small bezels takes a lot of practice. I feel this is what I really really want to be good at in my jewelry making skills..so I have been practicing a lot!

So now that the dust has settled I will be focusing on some new designs and some new cabs for the bead shop!

Metal Smithing 101 - Setting a Square Cabochon Or A Gemstone with Corners

Fire Agate Chunky Sterling Silver Ring

I did it! I finally learned and persisted on learning on how to set a stone with corners. I definitely wanted to share my experience with you! After taking a few classes at my community college, I learned primarily the basics of metal smithing. I learned how to use my saw, my disc cutter, my files, and my flexshaft tool..which does all kinds of things, but most importantly how to get that polished shiny shiny look.

The one thing I did not really get is how to set a square cabochon. The detailed technique of it is not so easy to grasp or even explain. I tried filing the corners down first, but that is not all you have to do. It really is technique and it needs to practiced to be a master at it.

First of all setting a square cabs with corners is very tricky. It really is important to practice your technique and use the right tool! YES, the right tool helps. I have been using a bezel pusher...but I really never used my bezel rocker. At first this tool was so strange to me. I wondered ..what? How the heck does this thing work? So, I threw it back in the drawer and that was it for the next few months. After struggling with the bezel pusher on square cabs one after the other...I thought..what am I doing wrong? Of course nothing in metalsmithing comes with instructions..have you noticed?

Bezel Rocker - Nifty Tool

The next step is to understand the technique used with this type of tool and to follow through with it. Honestly, I can't explain it in such great detail. But if you go to this site here: http://gemstone.smfforfree4.com/index.php/topic,1738.0.html this kind gentleman will show you EXACTLY how it is done. Oh my gosh...it really works! Once you get this..PRACTICE!

Lots of new things today, cabs and rings!

Take a look at one of my newest creations. This is my first chunky ring. A tree agate aka moss agate sits in my own handmade fine silver bezel. This ring was fun to make. It was nice especially because I had something of a real size to handle in my fingers. Its easy to see why some metalsmiths only like to make big pieces!

I am still learning to figure out the corners on square bezels. In some cases it appears that one would have to file down the corners so you don't get that pinched look. I did do this here. Just a tip for all you beginners. Hey any tips for me would be so kind of you, as well!

Okay and here is the next new ring...bling bling! A beautiful turquoise cabochon sized at 14 x 10mm sits in my very own handmade bezel as well. I have to say..this was fun too! I really like this size for myself. It is not a huge ring, but it isn't tiny either. Really a lot of deep color and pop to this sweetheart.

Okay so I just recieved these yesterday and I do have them listed in the shop! These are beautiful lavender jade 10 mm cabochons. Just a gorgeous color. My supplier states they are dyed, but most colored jade are. They really have a royal purple to them. I can't wait to set one of these somewhere!

Okay, so I have a lot in mind with these absolutely beautiful sea foam chalcedony faceted cabochons. The lapidarist cut these very nicely. The facets are precise and catch much light, not to mention the color is mesmerizing. I can see one of these in a gorgeous sterling silver ring myself. I am going to get my "b" tank for my acetylene torch...where I can soon start to work with wider thicker sterling silver.
I will just post one more addition here today..not to bore you all to death! But these cherry quartz are fabulous! They measure a 10 x 8mm and have beautiful rich coloring to them. They have a peachy look to me..just pretty pretty. Yes, I can't wait to set these too! I wish I had more time.

Faceted Peruvian Pink Opal Sterling Silver Ring

Yes, I am exploring the world of making my very own bezels now. It is a practice type of thing I would definitely say. But I am finding some hope and slowly but surely in its own unique way, something pretty shows up. Yes, I set this 8mm faceted peruvian pink opal, and well, I guess it has its own style! I think of this as a princess ring..so pink and pretty! I still need to work on my pinched corners, but I am finding that some of my customers actually like this style!

Blue Chalceondy Sterling Silver Post Earrings

I really like making post earrings too. It is a great way to learn to use your torch because you don't want to melt the bezels when you solder the post and vice versa. It also is a good project to practice using the stick solder, and learning to hold tiny things when you polish..and all of this good stuff.

Even back in the days before I started beading and wire wrapping, I really only wore post earrings! Although I love dangles too, I missed wearing a good post earring. Now, I can make them and it is great. These blue chalcedony are super gorgeous. Just a fun all round glow of blue to lighten your day. At some point, I am going to get a bit more extensive with my designs. Now that I can use my saw more efficiently ...

Smokey Quartz Sterling Silver Post Earrings

Now that I am taking my community college course in precious metal fabrication, I am waiting to learn all kinds of new things that I too can also share here with you. So please keep tune to the beginners world of metalsmithing with me. One book that I just recently purchased to help me with setting stones is called " Creative Stonesetting" by John Cogswell. I can't wait to get the book. It has a 5 star rating and lends a lot of ideas and techniques on how to set certain stones and etc.

I know that most of what I will learn will be basic stuff in class. There is just so much to learn, it is really overwhelming. The key for me is to plug away on something new, but make sure that what I am learning ..I get right. So yes, I am still stuck on the fabrication of square bezels. Not perfect, but it is getting better. But I have the round smaller ones down..which I am happy to say. No glues, no adhesives. Just simple pressure metalsmithing techniques are used.

Metal Smithing - Learning to Use the Jewelers Saw

This 9 minute video is by "Susan Lenart Kazmer". She discusses how a jewelers saw can be used.

Okay, so I took my first class at my local community college. And today, I learned how to use my jeweler's saw. I will tell you that up until now, I have never used my saw. Why? Because I am not comfortable with it. But, I am now! So I thought I would scope out some other tutorials for my blogger friends here to share a few things I have learned as well. These several video's will give you a better perspective of how your jewelers saw can work for you.

A Few tips from my personal instructor which helped me out a lot:

1. The teeth of the blade need to face down towards the ground. The cutting action happens on the down stroke, so apply the most pressure during this movement.

2. As you are applying the sawing action, turn your piece of metal as needed if you are wanting to cut out a curved line or corner. This will be easier then turning the saw itself.

3. Don't cut yourself. Build good habits while your learning how to hold your pieces of metal and watch your fingers.

In this 5 minute video you get a more quick perspective of how to use the saw in curved lines when your cutting out your design. I think watching Susan's video first will put this into a better perspective.

Another great place to learn how to use a jewelers saw is this website called, Beaducation. Here you will find a free online video class that really walks you step by step in detail on how to set up your saw adequately. It really is worth it. While your there, check out their free class on how to use a micro torch. It is a very good video that also walks you through the basics of a micro torch.

Brand New Cabochons for Metalsmithing!

Green onyx also known as green chalcedony have arrived today! I can't wait to list them in the bead store. They are absolutely gorgeous. They reflect light with the many facets in their cut. They measure about 7mm if I remember correctly. I can see a few pretty designs made with these!
Smokey quartz always seem to be a Fall/ Winter favorite. These particular stones are very very pretty. They are not so dark and reflect light with a light warm brown. I can't wait to set a few of these myself. I have a few ideas just crawling to get out of my sleeve. If only I can find the time!
I actually will be carrying these in a 6mm and 7mm size cabochon.

Beautiful carnelian..what a hot color! Brings any design alive. These are some pretty faceted carnelian cabs. As if the color was not enough..we add facets and waaalaaah! They certainly catch light and remind me of a sunset every time. They are 7mm as well.

I finally broke down and ordered some AAA amethyst smooth round cabs. Aren't they just beautiful? They really capture purple royalty perfectly. The color is so lively and they are really a nice color. They are not overly too dark, so once you set them you will not see sort of a black purple..NOPE, not these. They are just the right tint. I think these are 6 mm's too!

Metalsmithing - learning to set a bezel story.

As some of you may know I am just learning to expand in the craft of metalsmithing after all these years of beading. I have been making and hand forging my own earwires for dangles, but recently, I actually made some post earrings! The key here for me, is learning how to set a cabochon in a tiny 6mm sterling silver bezel .

Okay well...this is tricky folks. I will tell you that this is not exactly what I thought it was. It is really much harder then it looks. You have to apply a tremendous amount of pressure with a rolling action onto this tiny tiny set up ...without bending the earring post in half. I have been using my vise to securely clamp the earring, but I feel like I am going to break the whole thing!

It does come with a bit of practice and I finally get how to do this. But, the trick is really how the cabochon fits. Even if it fits, it maybe too tall and the bezel wall will not secure itself around the cab correctly. It really makes you think in terms of architecture and structural engineering. So the bottom line is, not all 6mm cabochons are going to work in those pre-made commercial bezels. You simply have to make your own if your gonna want to use that particular cab.

So, I decide to try to make my own bezel. Now please don't laugh ..yet! I have no formal training and I only own one book here " The Complete MetalSmith". It took me literally four tries to make this bezel for this ring, and to me it still does not look right. Oh gosh, yes, I am so frustrated! The bezel wall is probably too high here and therefore it cinched around the stone! Although I must say, this baby is not going anywhere. That gemstone is firmly secured in this setting. ( I say this proudly, because a lot of my smaller practice settings have this tiny rock to them. It drives me crazy!)

Maybe I should have tried a more simpler round bezel, but instead since my patience is not my virtue and I assume that I can make this happen no matter what. I simply go for the harder piece in trying to set a antique cushion cut labradorite gemstone.

So, I show this thing ( the ring above) to my husband and he giggles..yes giggles. And, because I wasted so much silver and it's price is going up like crazy I really want to scream...yes scream! But instead, I just start laughing really hard! I guess its better then throwing a tantrum. Geez, have you ever felt this way? I tell you that I love a challenge, and learning to metalsmith has its moments. I hope I can do this, I do.

This ring is not complete yet. I just needed to blog about it, to relieve my stress! It actually wears really nice and it is quite pretty in its own unique way. It really appears handmade which I think is the beauty of this whole thing. I mean, why am I trying to make everything look machine made. Whats the point here?

But, back to the ring. I am contemplating if I should list this in my shop. It would make a pretty cocktail ring. The photo's of this are not that great. I am thinking of darkening the silver and polishing it after for that aged look. I will have to see after that.

And then I also recently made this prehnite simple ring. It will be added to one of my stacking ring sets soon. It came out nicely as planned.

Good bye Summer Vacation!

Yes, summer is slipping away here in Central Oregon. Honestly, feels like we never really get a real summer here. Just last night it was 32 degrees. Yes, freezing level. It makes me sad to see the cold weather come back so quickly. I guess I could reminisce and tell you some fun things we did this summer with the kids.

Amongst some simple boating and fishing trips..relaxing in our great lakes around here is always a winner. We never catch any fish though! We hang out and chat about nothing and eat junk food all day, but the kids like it! They might swim, not me, its way tooo cold!

We somehow pulled a trip off to Disneyland and Sea World on the California coast! Thanks to a ton of airline miles and free hotel (donated by our kind parents timeshare) ....all we had to pay for was tickets and food. This photo above is Goofy's House...my dream home. I can relate to Goofy. I really wanted to go to D-Land just to see Goofy! Don't you think his house is just a work of art?

We literally spent 5 days at theme parks and 2 days on the beach on this trip. When we returned to Oregon we were exhausted, and guess what? We caught the flu! YES, we were all so sick for about 2 weeks. Summer July fun. Hot, we were really hot. Was this the swine flu? Well who knows..we survived and I guess now were ready for the next flu season!

I think whats most important is having some fun memorable times while the kids are young. I have two children who are ten years apart..so I really feel how fast it goes by. Being nearly 40 now I just want to enjoy them and do what I love ... Most importantly I really want the kids to have fun and be happy. Summer always brings fun times.. for me. I hate to see it go by again.

MetalSmithing Adventures - What I have made so far.

"Rainbow Moonstone, Swiss Blue Topaz & Kyanite Gemstone Stacking Rings"

Hey there blog friends! I have been pretty busy lately with new designs. I am having a blast learning metalsmithing. I am loving this! It is incredibly fun. I have made several things now and I am really getting the stacking ring thing down. With the help of a few good friends of mine who have been metalsmithing for quite some time, I am able to practice some of my techniques. I have to admit that setting these tiny stones in the bezels are NOT easy. Wow, I think my first one took nearly two hours to set. Oh my gosh..there are things to learn.

I have recently signed up for a community college course in precious metal fabrication. I can't wait. The cost is $149 for a 10 week course..not bad actually. I will tell you that if you are teachable, a lot of this can be self taught. Of course you practice practice, live and learn, waste some metal (but recycle it)start over, and try again. Well, this is how it works for me anyways!

Hand Forged Hoops with Chocolate Pearls & Copper Wire

I am proud to have made my very own soldered hoops for this design. Pretty simple yet the beads add a lot of texture and some color. They are really pretty on. My husband thinks they are "sexy"..LOL! Funny, that's the last thing I feel! I had to make several pair of these already, one for myself of course! These are in the shop right now..ready to go. I have ton's more ideas with this design floating in my head. It really is just finding the time to get to it all!

Rainbow Moonstone Post or Stud Earrings

I have always always wished I could make post earrings and guess what..I now can! Setting the gemstone in this tiny bezel takes effort, but I am slowly getting the idea and techniques down. I have made several studs now..and they are looking better each time. I do not have these in the shop yet, but I wanted to show you my progress here.

A few things that I need to work on are polishing and deburring. I really want seamless joints. This comes with time and figuring out all of my grindstones and polishing mandrels..confuses me really! So for me, back to practicing. I can't wait till my classes start now.

My first metalsmithing project - Copper stacking rings!

Hey Everyone! Okay so here is my very very first metalsmith project. I have never used a torch or soldered until today...finally. And, this is what I made! I started off using 16 guage pure copper wire and some copper solder wire to make these rings come together.

So.. this is what I did: I cut lengths of wire for 6 rings using 16g copper wire for size 7. I sanded down the ends. I then hammered them into a circle shape using my mandrel and hammer. I brought the two ends together using some pliers. At this point I may have filed the ends a little more to make sure they were flush and completely touching. I then actually dipped the ring in the flux..(no pre heating for me). Using the micro torch, I heated the circles and the two joints and used the copper wire solder for the very first time. When the flux started to turn white with some bubbling action I applied the wire solder to the joint and WOW..that was easy! The solder just balled up and melted in the joints. You can see this event happening..so neat! I tried one ring using a cut piece of solder, but I find it harder that way trying to keep it where it needed to stay. I dig wire solder..so much easier for me. I then put the rings in the pickle and almost instantly they became the red copper tone.

Now, the tricky part was filing sanding and polishing. I have a flex shaft tool and I used a grind stones for metal deburring first to remove extra solder in the seams. Then, I used another polishing wheel medium, and then used sand paper 600 grit. I had nothing higher then that. I have the buffing compounds and the buffing wheels but I did not have time to go that far. I then proceeded to put the rings in a tumbler with steel shots for about an hour. I had a bit of trouble holding the rings during the polishing process. I am not sure what people do in this part of the process. I think I am going to buy a flex shaft holder from Rio now..that I tried this.

I have to say it did take me pretty much all day...whew! I hope at some point I can perfect my new found skills fairly soon with some practice. The seams are still showing in silver even though I used copper solder...I am not sure why? I still want to learn to get that super high polished look with the buffs and tripoli. Next on my list.

Any advice? Any comments? Any tips? Learning to be a metalsmith is so fun, but I know there are alot of tips and great techniques out there. These are all greatly appreciated..thank you! Have a great day everyone!

My New Workbench - Beginning Metal Smithing

Okay, so I am not sure this is all so important to be sharing, but, I thought what the heck! I found my so called "new" work bench for applying my newbie metal smithing skills to. I still am waiting for much of my equipment and the desk sits a little lonely. But, at least you can really see it right now and check it out!

I found this great steal on Craigslist for $50 bucks. It's called a "bankers desk". It has 6 drawers and two pullout shelves on each side. I pulled one out for visual purposes. This desk is solid wood and really really heavy. It is 5 feet wide and 39 inches deep for a table top..lots of space! It is a bit beat looking, but I think it might do the trick while I get started with this endeavor.

My sweet husband Chuck, cleared out a space in his shop/garage for me so that I can pursue my endeavors with a bit of space. Now if I had it my way, I would rather him build me a cute work studio outside of my house instead. But, maybe later...hopefully!

You can always check out your own community craigslist. It seems to me that there are a whole lot of great deals going on. You might be lucky enough to catch something for free even. Really.
OR, if you can afford it,maybe, you would like to purchase a jewelers workbench shown above. This one is on sale at OttoFrei.com for $369 not including another $70 to $90 for shipping. At some point I hope to attain one of these, I think. If you are shopping for one, make sure it is solid wood built. For now I will make do and save this money for a nice rotary Foredom Flexshaft tool instead.

So, I have to admit, I am drooling to set this beautiful oval kyanite cabochon gemstone in some creation of mine. My mind is going coo coo about learning how to do this. I also have to add a picture of something pretty on my blog..these old pictures just don't do it justice! But of course if your looking for a cab or two you can always check out 101 Best Beads!

Beginning Metal Smithing

Okay so I finally broke down and did it! I am beginning my adventures in metal smithing. I am going to learn to solder and create new jewelry with metals like silver, gold and copper. I have done a lot of research and I will share my work and research with you here on my blog.

Okay so I may have went a little over the top here, but I figure if I am going to learn to do this I am going to need my metals to solder and create something exciting and new. Of course I am going to want to try PMC3 silver clay at some point as well.

Nita from Pointy Paws Etsy shop actually got me started and going with my start up kit. It is pretty extensive. I have noticed a lot of other kits are super simple and have just a few of these things.

I just love labradorite! It is a very mystique and unique gemstone. It is temperamental and from within it will show you it's real mood when the light is just right. Absolutely gorgeous!

Just check out these beads I bought the other day. I could not stop looking at them and I became trapped and then ..waalaa..I have some beautiful beads that I just can't resist.

And then I am off to see the wizard! I had to make something that I could wear with these beads. I could not resist. I will be having these on sale in my shop at Helenes Dreams for only $25.00! Summer is Coming to Oregon!

Finally! Flowers are starting to bloom. The weather is consistently warming up and I feel so happy to see the sun! Our winters can be so long and enduring that I often wonder what I am doing here! But when summer comes, I know why.

Last week we drove up to the Umpqua River where the salmon are starting the climb back up the river to spawn. It is an amazing thing to see.

My husband was able to catch a couple of good pictures of the salmon climbing up the fish ladder at Winchester Dam. They are starting to just come in ...mother nature is calling. These salmon weighed in about in average of 25 to 30 pounds and even more.

This photo above is Winchester Dam and right in front here is the actual fish ladder the salmon jump to get over this dam. When there are more fish ..you will see them jumping out in the middle. Its amazing!
Even more beautiful fish. It is just neat to see them in groups doing there thing. They are ancy and want to go home to lay their eggs. Most of them will die, however, there are some species that do not. Chinook and sockeye salmon ,for example, travel over 900 miles and climb nearly 7,000 feet from the Pacific ocean as they return to spawn.

New Cabs for the Bead Shop!

Okay I am excited to announce that after several years of research and desire, I am going to have to just do it. I really want to learn to how to make pretty soldered pendants and rings and all the really good stuff. Now that I have the bead shop and a super ton of beads..I think I will just have to do it now!

Just look at these pretty 8mm citrine antique cushion cabochons above. These would be so pretty in a ring or a pendant. These remind me of drops of crystal clear honey..so shiny and beautiful!

I just took some photo's of these beautiful turquoise smooth round cabochons. They measure about 5mm and are a great quality, with that earthy sweet look. Turquoise is one of my favorite summer wears. These cabs are also a new addition to 101 Best Beads!

I also have a lot of new 7 mm rainbow moonstone cabochons just waiting to be displayed in a hot "Bella" twilight ring! Gosh these are super pretty. Moonstone is a haunting gemstone for me and it does literally yank at my "soul". I have a pair of earrings that I created in my shop called "Soul. Anytime now I will be getting the 10mm rainbow moonstone cabs in. I can't wait.

So, for those of you wanting to learn and grow in the craft of jewelry design..contact me. I found this great forum called the "Starving Jewelry Artist". You have to check them out. And, there is some great tutorials on "Jewelry Lessons.com" as well. I will be compling a list here of sites that get's the newbie started, as I go along . I am actually ordering most of tools, torch and kiln in the next week or so.

A Dream is Coming True!

This last weekend I drove 7 hours to Loleta, CA to meet my new Etsy friend Tamara from Best Beads. Tamara wanted to sell her established bead business on Etsy to prepare for a new era in her life. She wants to focus on her gorgeous jewelry and work on the adoption of her second child.

So.. Guess what? I bought her bead business and now I am selling all of her wonderful gorgeous cabochons and beads! I have always wanted to do this, and now I am actually beginning to live out one of my dream business'. Someday when my debt is paid off, I would love to go travel the world for great beads and share them with other bead lovers.

My hope is to grow my jewelry and bead business to a point where I can rely on it's sole income for life's needs. Hmmm...how long will this take? Not sure, but I am going to work hard at it..because I truly love doing this.

What it is like to be a MOM!

The stories you have been sharing about all of your mom's is wonderful! Sometimes it is nice just to have a good thought and be able to put somethings into perspective. I really enjoy being a mom myself. I can't claim it to be an easy task, but the emotional and spiritual rewards are beyond words. I think most of us "Moms" would agree greatly that it is a love or feeling that can go so very very deep. And with this I must say that ..we all need this kind of love in our lives. It really does complete us.

Look What I bought Today!

I was scouring the forums today on Etsy..being a little bored waiting for my hubby and I bumped into this absolutely cute Etsy shop called "Naturally Felt". For only $24, I was able to purchase this 11 " X 11" inch insulated lunch tote. Nicole, the creator of these awesome sweet tote bags is allowing my custom request for a long shoulder strap instead of a short strap. Having the longer shoulder strap will allow me to use this tote for short lunch hikes through our forests. It is so practical and beautiful..what more could a girl ask for?

As you can see in this photo above this insulated tote bag can pack a punch of good things to bring! Notice the white pouch in this bag? Nicole even creates re-usable lunch bags for "going green". So no more plastic. Plastic is really bad for our environment as it is a petroleum derivative product. Wow, what a great idea Nicole!

Everyday is mother's day to me. Well, being a mom and knowing what it takes to juggle your life with children, husband, doggy, work and a hobby ...well whew! I could use the Mother's Day holiday every week! Don't you think?

I would love to tell you about my Mom! She is absolutely the most kindest loving woman I have ever met in my lifetime. Not only is she a wonderful mother to me, but she also is a kind person to all who touch her life. She has always believed in me, cared for me and truly supported me in everything I have ever tried. She has picked me up when I have fallen, and wiped many tears. Thank you so much Mom!

Here is a picture of my sweetest parents. I truly love them so much. And, I wish everyday that I can be closer to them! They live in Las Vegas, NV and think it is simply way to cold to live in Oregon. I have to agree. It is snowing right now..big huge flakes as we speak..yes in April!

But some of the best things my mom has passed on to me is good Asian cooking with lots of yummy vegetables, how to be kind and to remember those who have so little, and how to use all sorts of teas to help you feel better! My favorite present from her is my tea set. Her favorite is purple flowers, so I tried to make some for her up above called "Periwinkle Blues"! Ones that will last forever!

Sea Babe Jewelry was created on the North Shore of Oahu this year by Kristin and David. They are inspired by their beautiful surroundings of the ocean and islands. How wonderful it must be to live in Hawaii!

Kristin has a BA in Marketing, but has always also been a crafter at heart. She has a keen eye for finish and detail combined with a mastery of her colors and materials.

Before his jewelry career, David was a traveling surfer/ videographer. While traveling in Southeast Asia, David began acquiring jewelry and gemstones as a buying agent for many companies in California. Now he is gaining notoriety for his unique earwires and wire wrapped rings
Together Kristin and David have really put their creative spirits together to produce beautiful skilled pieces. Great detail goes into each piece of their work!
